Both Butler and Brumbies scrumhalf Nic White were part of the 10 nominations for the medal announced on Thursday.
Butler had a brilliant debut season for the Brumbies, stepping in to fill the void left when David Pocock tore his anterior cruciate ligament. His name is now alongside George Smith on the Brett Robinson.
The medal winner will be announced at the RUPA awards lunch on Wednesday, along with the winner of the Community Service Award, for which Brumbies winger Henry Speight is nominated.
Brumbies prop J.P. Smith is a chance for the Newcomer of the Year, Canberra's Sharni Williams could take out the Women's Sevens Players' Player, and Matt Toomua and Scott Fardy are in line for the People's Choice Award.
