London: Wallabies coach Michael Cheika hopes to finalise his coaching structure in December,  saying he is happy for Stephen Larkham and Nathan Grey to keep their Super Rugby jobs if Australia has two full-time coaches.

Cheika also endorsed Daryl Gibson as the man to replace him at the NSW Waratahs in 2016 and says he will have to be "creative" in how he manages his Super Rugby role with his Wallabies duties.

Cheika will join the Waratahs' pre-season training this week after spending the past five weeks in Europe as the Wallabies' new mentor.

But he will also be trying to fast-track his coaching plan for the Wallabies' World Cup campaign, with Larkham and Grey two of the top priorities.

Larkham is the ACT Brumbies' head coach and Grey is an assistant at the Waratahs, while the future of Test forwards expert Andrew Blades is unknown.

"We basically came here with a temporary structure so I need to sort that out next month," Cheika said.

"Nathan is a coach I'll be speaking to as soon as we get home about trying to combine those [Waratahs and Wallabies] jobs.

"There has to be at least one coach full-time for the Wallabies this year, other than me.

"I don't see the need for four full-time coaches if the quality is there. If that's the situation, then that can occur."

Cheika made immediate changes to the Wallabies coaching set-up when he replaced Ewen McKenzie last month and had just three days to prepare for the spring tour.

Blades is the only survivor from McKenzie's structure, which included Jim McKay and Nick Scrivener.

The new coaching team will have Cheika, as well as specialists in attack, defence and contact and the set piece.

Cheika contacted all of Australia's Super Rugby coaches and asked them to join him on the spring tour of Europe. But all declined because of short notice and their respective clubs' pre-season training.

Larkham is one of Australia's greatest playmakers, leading the Wallabies to a World Cup triumph in 1999 and has said he would be open to joining the Test side after the Super Rugby season.

"I don't mind sharing with Super Rugby not for any other reason than making sure we've got people of quality," Cheika said.

"If we think the situation could work [with Larkham remaining Brumbies coach], and he thinks it could work, then I don't see why it can't happen."

Former All Black Gibson has been overseeing Waratahs pre-season training in the absence of Cheika and Grey.

Cheika took the Wallabies job on the condition he could remain as the Waratahs' coach for their Super Rugby championship defence next year.

But he will give Gibson extra responsibility during the season to free him up to broaden his focus to World Cup preparation.

"I've got good coaches at the Waratahs … [Gibson] is the guy we're hoping will be the coach beyond 2015 and this is good experience for him," Cheika said.

"I have to be well organised so that the Waratahs players know that when I'm there, that's my priority. But sometimes I'm not going to be there and it won't be my priority.

"Yes, there are challenges, but yes, it is doable with the right mindset from myself and the lads."

Cheika  met with each player in London this past week to discuss their World Cup prospects.

He has given them a breakdown of individual positions with players who are in contention for a World Cup spot.

There are just 31 World Cup spots available, but 34 players have toured Europe while David Pocock, Stephen Moore, Tatafu Polota-Nau, Wycliff Palu, James O'Connor, Scott Fardy, Scott Higginbotham and Karmichael Hunt are on a list who add intense competition for selection.

"I'm making a list of players, in detail, of who I should be looking at to make the right decisions and not just guess," Cheika said.

"Some guys are stable in their positions. But there are some positions that are hotly disputed. Out of 31, there will be 17 forwards and 14 backs. The heat starts to come on for spots.

"These guys are going to be bashing each other one day and loving each other the next. We've got to be proud in everything we do, maybe that hasn't been there.

"I've got ideas brewing about how we can keep continuity during the Super Rugby season."

Cheika is keen to speak with O'Connor and believes Hunt can make a successful transition to rugby union, describing him as an "awesome" talent for the Test side.

Wallabies hopefuls will also be given extra training and technique work to do during the Super Rugby season. But Cheika is intent on not disrupting individual team set-ups.

There is the prospect of positional meetings before the Wallabies gather, with Cheika keen to get players together to fast-track World Cup development.

He said the tour of Europe had given him a chance to "lay the markers for change".

"We've had two or three incidents during the trip where I haven't liked the mentality. I've let them know about it and that's given the players a chance to see what I'm about," Cheika said.

"Maybe some things that were acceptable in the past aren't acceptable now. There were different moments where I've thought it was important to put down a marker because it wasn't good enough."
