Kieren, 11, is in Year 5 at Walhallow Public School and was recently named a winner in the annual Young Indigenous Art Awards.
He, mum Kristy Sampson, dad Jimmy Waters and Walhallow principal Leeanne Batho are leaving on Saturday for the awards ceremony at The Hilton in Melbourne.
Kieren was the winner of the Australian Scholarship Group category of the competition and was encouraged to enter after a visit to the school in October by renowned Australian
science fiction and fantasy author Paul Collins and illustrator Marjory Gardner.
“Marjory actually noticed Kieren while she was visiting and noted what a good little artist he was,” Mrs Batho said.
She said the awards were all about giving opportunities to talented young indigenous artists and Kieren already had a goal for next year, aiming to create an artwork that earns him the top award of Young Australian Indigenous Artist of the Year.
“It’s good for this district to see that our local children can enter an Australia-wide competition and do well,” Mrs Batho said.
