BENDEMEER Baggy Green hopeful Josh Hazlewood and his close-knit family face an agonising wait ahead of Australia’s first Test in Brisbane next week. The towering 23-year-old’s stunning early season one-day form was rewarded yesterday with selection in a 12-man squad to face the might of India next Thursday.

But with the paceman facing stiff competition from established stars Mitchell Johnson, Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle, the Hazlewood clan are trying not to get carried away.
Their caution is understandable given that two years ago he appeared certain to make his Test debut in Perth only to be announced as 12th man on the morning of the match.
“We’ve got everything crossed for him,” said Hazlewood’s father, Trevor.
“We’re hopeful because he’s bowled well for a while now.
“He wants to be in there and he’s done it the hard way. He’s much more mature, he’s harder, he’s stronger and hopefully he’s over his growing pains.”
Hazlewood led the attack with nine wickets in Australia’s recent 4-1 one-day series win over South Africa, which included a career-best 5/31.
Plenty of local batsmen can empathise with South Africa’s star-studded batting line-up after being brought undone in years past by the former Oxley High student’s pace, bounce and accuracy.
Trevor said that if picked, his son would not be over-awed at the prospect of bowling to a powerful Indian batting side comprising the likes of Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara.
“He’ll just walk straight in there with no qualms,” he said. “He’s been around in Sydney since he was about 17 playing first-class cricket.
“He’ll do a bit of sledging, that’s just part of the game. But he’ll mostly just let the ball do the
talking.”
Parents Trevor and Anne, as well as siblings Aaron and Casey, are hoping the notoriously secretive selectors reveal the side in plenty of time for them to make the drive to Brisbane.
“(In 2012) we left Bendemeer about 4pm, drove to Sydney, stayed the night, flew to Perth and we were 10 minutes from the ground when we heard he’d made 12th man,” Trevor said.
“Hopefully we get a different result this time.”
