Kentucky’s 71-run win over Uralla at John Oxley was built on a 109-run second wicket partnership between opening bat Bob Jex (57) and comeback kid Kirin Walters (59).
They enabled Kentucky to finish its 40 overs with 8-207 and then bowl out Uralla for 136.
Presbyterian minister Dave Burge and Dave Woodley both scored 16 for Kentucky while opening bowlers Josh McFarland (3-45) and Cameron Kelly (3-28) both had success.
Matt Tasik and Jay Grills both snared a wicket each but their batsmen fell cheaply.
At one stage Uralla was 8-87 but Tasik (31) and Pat Kelly (17n) put on 49 for the final wicket after Jay Grills was forced to retire hurt, scoring just two.
Justin Gibson led the Kentucky attack, claiming 4-40 while Walters, who was making a comeback after a long layoff, completed a good day by claiming 3-11 off his four overs.
At Captain Cook Park, the Rugby League boys claimed their first win of the season with a 58-run win over Round Swamp.
Batting first, Rugby League made 4-211 despite a shaky start when Michael Boyd was dismissed in Thomas Hoy’s first over (second over of the game) to leave League 1-4.
However Mooney (57), Truck Laurie (56) and Thomas Boyd (40no) found form, with skipper Aaron Johnson (22) and his brother Mark Johnson (15no) also chipping in.
Lee Harrison, Thomas Hoy, Bill Wake and Kyle Goodwin all captured a wicket apiece for side which had some early setbacks.
Without Barry Hoy and fielding just nine men, Swamp was 3-13 at one stage before Harrison (15) and Goodwin (61) joined forces.
Goodwin tonked six sixes and six fours in his brutal innings.
However Brian Mansfield (13) was the only other batsman to reach double figures and Swamp fell for 153.
Peter Mooney’s match finished brightly, the allrounder capturing 3-29 and skipper Aaron Johnson copped some stick in claiming 2-65 off his 10. Mark Johnson claimed 2-14 with his spin as well.
The win enabled Rugby League to join Colts on 14, eight points behind Uralla, Round Swamp and Kentucky, who are all on 22.
