More than 1000 people are estimated to have poured through the doors of the old Sam’s Warehouse building in search of a bargain.
With a couple of hundred thousand books on display, there was literally something for everyone, according to club member Greg Clark.
“It’s just a wonderful way of raising money,” he said. “We’re only charging $1 or $2 a book, or $3 for a really big one.
“We had one lady who paid $80 all up and, if she had bought them in a shop, she would have paid about $2000 – so she left with a smile on her face.”
The book sale is the Lions Club’s biggest annual fund-raiser and the proceeds will go straight to a variety of local charities, including the children’s playground at the Marsupial Park.
It runs from 8am to 5pm through until Sunday and Mr Clark said despite the roaring trade, there was still an incredible amount of quality books left.
“You cannot even tell that any have gone out,” he said.
“There’s easily still 100,000 or more books there.
“We’ve been sorting the books for a month and, while I haven’t added up all the hours that went into it, I reckon it would be about 3000 hours.”
