The unbeaten Boomers won their Division 3 Australian Over 60 Championship with a 53-run win over the Australian Cricket Society at Casey Fields, Dandenong last week.
Skippered by Quirindi’s Terry Cohen, the side contained Cohen’s Quirindi teammates Rick Sampson and Jim Stewart as well as Tamworth quartet Dave Head, Ron Farrell, Ian Kitching and Terry Murphy.
All seven performed over the carnival with Stewart (36 ret), Head (32), Farrell (22) and Cohen (36 ret) all making runs in the good 6-238 total from 40 overs.
ACS were then restricted to 65-186 with Terry Murphy (1-41) claiming a wicket and Ian Kitching (0-28 off six overs) bowling tightly.
Dave Head said it was a marvellous week for not only the Boomers but also the other players from the local region who were dotted throughout the five NSW sides.
Doug Crowell also played in one NSW Over 70s side and Mike Cashman played in another that made the final.
Col Barton played in a NSW side that won their Division 4 title as well.
In Tamworth an Over 50s trial was played at No 1 Oval on Friday night.
About 18 players turned up, said organiser Greg Kellett.
“It’s a work in progress,” Kellett said of organising regular over 50s games.
“We’re progressing. We’ve got about 40 names but have to be patient. The Over 60s have another Inter Regional game against Mid North Coast on November 28 and then we have No 1 Oval booked for December 5 and 12.
“Hopefully get a few players for those nights.
“And we did have a good hit on Friday night too. Bede Maher batted pretty well, scored 30 in about five overs. Stevo (Andrew Stevenson) came over and had a run too after the T20 (Tamworth Premier League).
“And if there are any Over 50s out there in the region wanting a game they can come along on the 5th and 12th too. They’re all invited.”
