The Sapphire City Rollers will meet Upper Hunter in Tamworth tomorrow for a third-round Country Plate showdown and are confident they will be back at Riverside for the finals at the end of December.
Captain Lachlan Binnie said the team had really come together this season and was enjoying the cricket, even though it hasn’t been pushed yet.
The skipper bats at number five and has only faced up once so far.
He has also lost all three tosses.
“I don’t know what I would do if I won,” Binnie said.
Inverell has been sent into the field in all three games and has come up trumps in each.
“Bowling first has worked for us so I would have to think about it.”
Opening bowler Sean Rynne took five wickets in the opening game against Moree and then four against Glen Innes in a Connolly Cup clash.
The side then easily accounted for Walcha in the next outing, before a local derby against Gwydir was washed out.
“I think we would have got the points in that game as well,” Binnie said.
Mick Kenny has been the other stand-out in the side.
The tall allrounder caused some troubles with the new ball and hit plenty at first drop.
Unfortunately for Kenny, he hasn’t been converting rep runs to grade, copping a pair in the first fortnight of the season.
First-round centurion Dave Mudaliar has also been keeping the scorers busy at four.
“It is a pretty well-rounded side,” Binnie said.
“We have two spinners and some good seamers.”
Those two spinners, Richard Wilson and Josh Cook, might have a field day on the so-far inconsistent Dick Edwards pitch.
The two sides have met a few times over the past few years with Inverell generally winning.
“When they come here they are not real flash with the travel,” Binnie said.
“I don’t know what to expect a bit closer to home but I reckon we will be right.
“Our bowlers have been really patient and our fielding excellent.
“That is where we win the games.”
Inverell bowed out in the fourth round last year but is determined to hit the finals this time.
They have been training once a week, as well as their club training.
“It is vital to get the side to gel,” Binnie said.
“We are having a great time and really enjoying it.
“I guess it helps when you’re winning.”
The game starts at 10am.
