In the late 1990s, Mr Messenger won the "Red Faces" segment on the Nine Network's Hey Hey It's Saturday program as the "brave poet".
In the light-hearted skit, Mr Messenger waxes lyrical about using an Arnott's Arrow Root biscuit to win the heart of a woman.
Despite his less than authentic Scottish accent, host Daryl Somers jokes afterwards that Mr Messenger is in fact Mel Gibson, who portrayed Scottish independence leader William Wallace in the movie Braveheart.
Meanwhile, his expulsion from the Palmer United Party on Wednesday has significantly escalated tensions in the PUP.
Mr Messenger was expelled from the PUP on Wednesday night by party leader Clive Palmer on the grounds that he had made "false and misleading statement about our senators".
In addition, Mr Palmer said that "everything Senator Lambie says is really coming from her chief of staff. Senator Lambie is simply Rob Messenger's mouthpiece".
But who is Rob Messenger?
The Bundaberg-born Messenger is no stranger to controversy. After serving in the RAAF and working for the ABC, he entered the Queensland Parliament as the member for Burnett between 2004 and 2012.
Eventually, he quit the LNP claiming the party had deserted him before losing his seat two years later in the 2012 state election.
In 2013, Mr Messenger stood for the PUP as a candidate in the federal seat of Hinkler but was thrashed, attracting 17.7 per cent of the primary vote.
Whether his expulsion from the PUP will split the party remains to be seen.
