Pathology North organised the day in conjunction with International Pathology Day and was encouraged by the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, which is keen to give the public more information about what goes on in pathology labs around the nation.
“It’s quite often seen as the hidden sector of the medical world,” Tamworth hospital medical officer Dimity Chaseling said.
Without it, though, the system would grind to a halt, with 70 per cent of diagnoses and 100 per cent of all cancer diagnoses made through pathology.
Ms Chaseling said about 80 people took the opportunity to find out more, enjoying interactive displays, laboratory tours and even a sausage sizzle.
There were also four talks on the day, including one on the current Ebola outbreak in Africa and another a Q-and-A session with the unit’s pathologists.
Ms Chaseling said it was the first open day in about 15 years and its success would likely lead to another next year.
