But when the jobs are done, the pair's alter-egos fly as Madison and Ryan Eagles - two of Australia's best pro wrestlers.

"I like to think of it as soap opera with violence," said Mrs Ryan only moments after she pummelled her husband to the ground then locked his head under her arm with a menacing growl.

Mr and Mrs Ryan, aged 31 and 30 respectively, have been professional wrestlers for the past 13 years.

They currently train about 30 students out of the wrestling ring set up in their garage in Elderslie.

Mrs Ryan was training with the amateur wrestling team heading to the Beijing Olympics when she "decided to travel the world with pro wrestling instead" and established Sydney's first women's professional wrestling company in 2008.

Formerly ranked the world's number one female wrestler, Mrs Ryan is hoping to defend her status as Sydney's tag-team champion when she and her partner compete in the "Injustice League" tournament at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre on Saturday night.

"Being hit with a chair is very hard to fake," she said. "We really hit each other, we really punch each other, we really kick each other - it's just the control of it."

Professional wrestling mixes athleticism with drama. Dominated by men, the sport has wrestlers thrashing and throwing each other around the ring, pulling moves like the "German suplex", "brain buster" and "roundhouse kick" and exaggerating their injuries with plenty of theatrics.

In the United States, professional wrestling has a large following with thousands of spectators filling stadiums to watch World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) fighters take each other out.

However Mr Ryan said the perception that "Australians are not as good as the Americans" means pro wrestling is still very much a niche sport locally.

"When we approach businesses for sponsorship they kind of see it as a bit of a joke and they don't see the amount of effort that we put in to prepare for each event,"  Mr Ryan said.

"We want to aways go above and beyond what people think local wrestling shows might be."

The lack of female wrestlers in Australia means Mrs Ryan regularly competes against men in local tournaments and hopes this helps defy stereotypes of women in the sport.

"At this point in time [WWE] are pushing that sexual, beautiful idea with the women ... well we're not just eye candy, we're real athletes," she said. "We can wrestle just as well as the guys if not better."

Saturday night's tournament is being organised by the Ryans' training academy, Pro Wrestling Alliance.
