Born and raised in Goolhi, west of Gunnedah, I consider myself to be lucky to have the privilege of being a dirt-covered kid with a rural up-bringing.
My childhood was enriched with the outdoors, mucking about in the bush and most importantly, being surrounded by the genuine hard working people that characterise the rural farming communities of outback NSW and Australia.
As such it is with growing concern for these people, our friends and family, those of previous generations who fought to save our land that I see the heartbreak and disappointment in the eyes of the Maules Creek community.
Maules Creek community has a mammoth battle on their hands to save their land and protect their health and that of the next generations against the mine about to obliterate an entire state forest in front of their eyes.
Already rooftops are covered with dust infiltrating their drinking water supply, properties have become unsaleable and the people are fearful of what will become of their land and country and health.
The results of mining on our people’s health and the destruction of our land will be evident in future years.
We must not put ourselves in a position where we look back with regret. Let’s do something while we can, before it is too late. Log on to www.landwaterfuture.org.au and sign the pledge to support mining no-go zones.
There is no going back for a mining community.
The land simply cannot recover from such destruction.
Mines destroy people, their relationships, health, community and then some.
It is not about being anti-mining, its about mining in areas appropriate to do so – away from communities and our water catchments.
An information day and barbecue will be held at the property Wando on Black Mountain Creek Rd at Maules Creek this Sunday, November 1. This day will provide an opportunity to voice your concerns about the mining industry, meet local farmers and activists, learn how to best support mining no-go zones.
