Wade's completed one-match ban, as a result of breaking a dressing-room window after his dismissal, and his recent poor batting results, did not stop selectors from plumping for him when Brad Haddin is rested for the first two home one-dayers against South Africa next month.

Since his elevation to captain of Victoria last year, Wade has twice been suspended, although only the window incident was related to the aggressive on-field attitude for which he is renowned. The 26-year-old said his temperament was not yet at the standard needed for a state cricket captain.

"I was disappointed with how it all went down, but I understand that you can't do that. I'm captain of Victoria now and everyone's watching so I've got to be better at that kind of stuff and calm down a little bit maybe," he said.

"On the ground comes really naturally to me and I have got a personality to play pretty hard on the ground, but I've had to mould that a little bit off the field. With what happened last week, I've had to work on that kind of stuff. I think that has been the biggest difference with the captaincy; you're under the microscope the whole time, whether you're on or off the field."

Wade said he was pleased with his glovework in the Matador Cup, in which he ranked second with nine dismissals and claimed three of the tournament's five stumpings. He also expressed appreciation that selectors had looked beyond his Matador Cup record of 101 runs at 16.83.

"I think over the years I've performed really well with the bat, so for them to have confidence in my batting [was seemingly] based on that; they weren't worried about the [recent] runs this time around," he said.

Wade is eager to thrive in the two one-dayers against South Africa, "so that the next time they're looking for someone ... I'll be first in line".
