Ewan McGregor has lashed out at the Star Wars memorabilia market, labelling collectors "parasitical lowlifes" and "f---ing wankers".

In an interview with American men's magazine Details, McGregor was asked if he'd had any positive experiences of Star Wars fans.

The 43-year-old Scottish actor, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the second trilogy in George Lucas's sci-fi fantasy franchise, replied in the negative.

"I don't have any experience with them," he said, referring to the fans. "I've never been to one of the [fan] conventions. The people I meet are the f---ers who want me to sign Star Wars photos so they can sell them on the internet, or the people at premieres who are crushing children against barriers to get me to sign their f---ing picture of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

"They're not fans. They're parasitical lowlifes and f---ing wankers."

Asked if he could understand why so many fans rated the first of his Star Wars movies, Episode I – The Phantom Menace, as the worst by a long shot, McGregor was more sympathetic.

"The fans waited so long and wanted to feel like they did when they watched the first film, but they were grown-ups by that time," he said. "I don't mind the criticism. I've heard it to my face."

McGregor, who can currently be seen in the Australian crime thriller Son of a Gun, also confirmed that a sequel to Trainspotting was a real possibility.

"It looks like it might happen," he said. "The idea is that we shoot it in 2016, which would be 20 years after the original came out. And I'd be up for it. I wouldn't have been 10 years ago, but I am now."
