At a time when the majority of Tamworth district residents are extremely concerned with our city’s water supply (albeit, a serious lack thereof) I am completely perplexed by some of council’s questionable and destructive decisions.
In the past few months I have witnessed our council completely obliterate a stand of ironbark trees near Tamworth South Public School, with no replacements made, either with the same or more suitable trees.
The same thing happened with a large shady tree at the Commonwealth Bank on Crown St. A tree completely destroyed and not replaced.
This is in an area of urban sprawl – heaps of concrete, tar, buildings and traffic – and now no greenery to help shade and cool the area.
Now let’s get to the really crap decisions!
West Tamworth League Club has been allowed to completely demolish the sporting field adjacent to Scully pool to erect a totally unwarranted or needed motel.
Aren’t the numerous ones available in our city already good enough or accessible enough?
Again, another huge stand of trees completely destroyed and I bet they aren’t replaced with anything near what had been there.
And the poolgoers will have a great view of a huge monstrosity of the building.
Oh that’s right – Scully will also be allowed to be consumed so that a huge, overpriced, expensive pool can be built out near TRECC/AELEC so that only the affluent residents can afford to use it!
That’s the new CBD, isn’t it?
And another green stand on the Scott Rd end of Peel St consumed by another supermarket (yes we may need one), but at what cost to our city?
And I daresay there are heaps more examples that I haven’t even seen.
Most cities in Australia have had the foresight to recognise the importance of green areas within communities and the aesthetic qualities they provide for residents and animals – both domestic and native.
Those councils also have the wisdom to ensure they conserve them.
As we all know – rainforests help create rain, deserts don’t create much at all.
Therefore any trees we have will help contribute to our rainfall, helping to replenish and maintain our city’s water supply.
Destroying our trees and green areas destroys our ecosystem.
It’s not rocket science!
* Why is our council now so focused on ensuring that green areas and trees are completely obliterated?
* How are they able to completely avoid any environmental impact requirements?
* Why is it that people in power only ever see the dollar signs, with complete contempt for any other contributing factors?
I’m totally disgusted with council’s complete disregard for its residents (whom they are supposed to be representing), the green areas and trees, along with the domestic and native animals that frequent them.
These aspects have all helped contribute to making Tamworth the beautiful city it was!
Poor, poor form!
