During National Water Week a new water education resource has made its local debut at a number of story time sessions around the council region.
Yesterday council water sustainability officer Ian Lobban was at Calrossy Preschool to read a range of water-wise storybooks written and illustrated especially for preschool and early primary students. Mr Lobban said Before the Glass, After the Drain, Water For Life and Raindrop explained some of the aspects of the water cycle and water conservation messages in a way young children could easily understand.
“We see the early childhood level as an important component of our overall community awareness and education strategy,” he said.
“The hope is that what we older generations call ‘water-wise’ behaviour will just become everyday behaviour for children when it comes to their water usage.”
Ten sets of the books are also now available through council’s six libraries, along with a number of large format sets for teachers to borrow for use as a classroom resource.
National Water Week is in its 20th year, with this year’s theme being “Water Sources: There are more than you think!”
“National Water Week provides an opportunity to remind ourselves and teach others that water must be used wisely if there is to be enough to meet the needs of our future generations,” Mr Lobban said.
