Speculation about a five star hotel in Tamworth reminds me of speculation quite some time ago about the sale of the Grace Bros building and the possibility of building a six storey building on the site.

I was horrified at the thought of a six storey building in the middle of Peel St but, at the time, I wondered whether Tamworth had a building height limit.
I still wonder, and maybe, before we get too far down the track of this five start hotel possibility, maybe someone from Tamworth Regional Council could let us know: firstly, whether there is a limit and, if there is, how far would council bend to the will of big spending developers.
I, for one, would hate to see high rise buildings in our lovely country town.

News Editor’s Note: TRC tells us that in fact under the Tamworth development control plan there are guidelines for residential building heights but no such guidelines for commercial areas.
There are guidelines on floor to space ratios contained within the LEP (Local Environment Plan) which would in effect guide building height/width/floor space/parking issues for new buildings.
It’s probably a measure of these and the associated building costs to go up – and the ready availability of land in most regional centres that has seen few high rise buildings built up until now.
