Kyly Clarke (model/presenter/interior designer/WAG/weather girl) has the prescription for beautifying "all aspects of your life". I need a fitness routine. I need a "fashion philosophy". I need block-coloured couches and ottomans. I need satisfactory personal hygiene. "Shower. Always shower," Clarke preaches on her new blog "Lyfestyled".

There, too, from the wife of Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke, come tips on bringing colour to your surrounds: yellow for enlightenment; blue for loyalty and cleanliness; orange for high visibility. Despair is forever at the door. "Many people live in a monochrome abyss, lack luster (sic) and void of any colour in their life," she says.

Her blog covers fashion, food and chairs. It promises to "give you all the inspiration and practical tips you need to look and feel beautiful every day" but it feels like a life half-baked. A section on the "top 5 ordinary super foods" fails to list any of them. Readers are left adrift similarly over the "top 5 brekkies". It's a safe bet quinoa is in there somewhere.

Clarke has come late to a genre already bustling with actors, models and brand ambassadors. Celebrity lifestyle websites are a sparkly patch of promises - you, too, can have the perfect life, or the whiff of one belonging to someone famous. I only regret that I have but one life to give.

Actor Gwyneth Paltrow bestowed her lifestyle site "Goop" on the world in 2008, "to share all of life's positives", and brought forth a parade of pale-pink imitators. In such number that lifestyle matriarch Martha Stewart recently spat: "[Paltrow] just needs to be quiet. She's a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn't be trying to be Martha Stewart."

Among the celebrity lifestyle offerings are Jesinta Campbell ("TV presenter/modeler/traveller") and her recipes for "green juice" and a website section marked "inspire me" that is awkwardly empty. Rebecca Judd ("wife/mother/model/television presenter/speech pathologist") boasts a "Dear Bec" section for readers needing help. "Dear Bec, how do I treat myself to an entirely new bedroom?" (Answer: place a "statement accent chair" in the corner). "Dear Bec, should Australia expand its military operations into Syria?" "Dear Bec, do you love me?"

Hollywood actor Blake Lively (star of Gossip Girl and The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants - 1 and 2) launched her lifestyle website "Preserve" in July, with the goal "to support the America we've always known, and the one we haven't met yet". Such support includes a trench coat for $US1350 ($A1540), a floral teepee ($US325) and vegan hot fudge ($US10.50).

"I'm no editor, no artisan, no expert. And certainly no arbiter of what you should buy, wear, or eat," Lively says. But there is a life being peddled here, of red carpets and couture gowns. A life you can't afford and can never have, without the aid of personal assistants and "barre attack trainers". That's not necessarily a criticism. It certainly looks better than my life.

Perched atop the pile of plumped cushions is Paltrow, who reckons she is "curating the best of lifestyle to help her readers save time, simplify and feel inspired". The latest edition of her weekly online newsletter boasts a selection of "oozy" cashmere sweaters, a Q&A with a woman who talks to dead people and a recipe for "perfect gluten-free pie crust".

I'm not so much inspired as envious. And curious. Paltrow has won an Oscar. She is famous and beautiful and wealthy. Why is she spending time telling me to buy a "super deluxe backgammon board"?

Perhaps she is lonely (even more so since announcing on Goop, in March, that she had "consciously uncoupled" from partner Chris Martin). Perhaps she needs the attention. Perhaps we need each other, in the pursuit of a more beautiful life, or a certain kind of life at least.
