No, it’s not a self-help group for the facially challenged, it’s a unique fundraiser coming to a pub near you.
The Ugly (standing for Understanding, Generous, Likeable You) Bartender of the Year competition has again landed in Tamworth, with a host of local bartenders taking part in the Leukaemia Foundation fundraiser.
One of them is the Tudor Hotel’s Miss Smith, 20, on a one-woman mission to raise $10,000 and she’s holding a “Sunday Sesh” on the rooftop of the Tudor on October 19.
She’s hoping a massive garage sale, a mountain of merchandise and even a bar-top piggy bank will help her reach her goal.
“Cancer has affected a number of people in my family and I thought this was a great opportunity to help raise money,” Miss Smith said.
“I’d had a few friends who had done it before and I thought ‘why not?’.”
Tickets are $60 to the Sunday Sesh and will include a sumptuous meal, four drink tickets and entertainment by Allison Forbes.
Miss Smith is also looking for more donations for her bumper garage sale, which will be held on Saturday, October 18.
Other local bartenders to take part in the quest are Belinda Cupples from the Post Office Hotel, Julie Hardman from Joe Maguire’s and Lucy Smith from the Tamworth.
Every 46 minutes, an Australian is diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma. And if they live in the country, the impact can be even greater because they often relocate to the city during treatment.
The money raised will help the Leukaemia Foundation to provide regional families with a fully-
furnished place to call home in the city for as long as they need it.
