Good morning and welcome to day two of AFL trade period. Plenty of news through already, including North Melbourne re-signing fringe midfielder/defender Ben Jacobs for a further season, and Travis Varcoe being rated a "50-50'" chance to move according to his manager Tom Petroro on AFL Trade Radio.
There was huge news late last night with Sydney's All-Australian defender Nick Malceski signing a three-year deal to join the Gold Coast Suns as a free agent.
Swans coach John Longmire paid tribute to the departing veteran in a media release:
“I’ve been fortunate to be at the Swans for the entirety of Nick’s football career and he’s been an absolute pleasure to coach and a great person to have around the club,” Longmire said.
“While his performance in the 2012 Grand Final will go down in Swans history, his overall contribution to the Swans has been fantastic.
“He’s shown determination to overcome three knee reconstructions, he’s been a fantastic player for our football club, he’s a great person and I wish him a successful end to his career.”
Petroro also said that Adelaide and Essendon are the two clubs that have shown the most interest in GWS ruckman Jonathan Giles.
The manager added that former number two draft pick Jono O'Rourke of GWS was likely to decide in the next two days whether he wanted to go to Hawthorn or St Kilda with the Giants reluctantly accepting that he would be traded back to Victoria.
Emma Quayle revealed last night that retired Bomber Jason Winderlich could kick start his AFL career at Richmond.
Ben Howlett's manager Jason Dover has just told AFL Trade Radio that the midfielder is more likely to sign if James Hird's coaching position becomes more entrenched.
"Ben's played his best footy under Hirdy."
Dover confirmed West Australian Howlett was sounded out by both West Coast and Fremantle.
Dover says that troubled Fremantle youngster Josh Simpson's future remains up in the air with the Dockers yet to decide on the out-of-contract midfielder.
Port Adelaide list manager Jason Cripps has ruled out the Power trading any of Chad Wingard, Ollie Wines or Hamish Hartlett to Essendon for Paddy Ryder.
“Wingard, Wines and Hartlett, if Essendon are talking apples for apples, I’m not sure that marries up,” Cripps said on SEN.
“Wingard is 21, Wines is 20 and Hartlett is 24 and in our leadership group, so they’re not really comparable.
“Other players in our top bracket won’t be discussed.”
More from Dover on Howlett:
-Ben is "very much a James Hird fan."
- Asked if Hird was to be removed as coach in the next week whether Howlett would look elsewhere, Dover said "it might be heading that way."

Levi Greenwood has requested a trade to Collingwood.

Michael Gleeson reports that Greenwood will likely go for a second round pick. The midfielder informed North Melbourne of his decision from Bali where he is on holiday.
The Pies have beaten out both the Bulldogs, and North, who had made an improved offer to Greenwood.
More to come shortly
AFL Trade Radio is now reporting that Carlton small forward Jeff Garlett has requested a trade to Melbourne.
Liam Mannix was at Collingwood today, and reports that football manager Rodney Eade outlined who the Magpies' targets are at the Brisbane Lions, and some comments on Levi Greenwood's acquisition:
On Beams:
"there's no update at this stage.
A fair deal for Beams would be "a draft pick and one of five or six players" - he nominated James Aish and Jack Redden.
On the need for Greenwood:
"We need some bigger bodied players in the midfield to support Pendles. You get a really experienced midfield who can find the ball and actually get the ball going forward. Greenwood's year this year was a fantastic season."
Also, here is Michael Gleeson's story on Greenwood choosing the Pies.
BREAKING: Adelaide has unveiled Phil Walsh as its senior coach.
Walsh, who had been an assistant at Port Adelaide has been signed on a three-year deal.
In a statement, Crows chairman Rob Chapman has praised Walsh.
“The feedback we have received from across the competition reinforces what we already knew – Phil Walsh is a quality individual and an outstanding football person,” Chapman said.

Port Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas congratulated Walsh on his appointment.
“On behalf of everyone at Port Adelaide I wish Phil all the very best in his new role at the Crows,” Thomas said in an official statement.
“Although we are disappointed to lose a coach of Phil’s ability we respect his desire to be a senior coach and wish him luck with the position. As a club we can be proud that another one of our people is admired so much that they’ve been recruited by a competitor for a senior coaching role."
Walsh follows Alan Richardson as the second Power assistant to fill take up an AFL coaching job in 12 months.
He also joins Nathan Buckley, Justin Leppitsch, Ross Lyon, and Chris Scott as ex-Brisbane Bears players now in an AFL coaching position.

Liam Pickering, the manager of Levi Greenwood on AFL Trade Radio:
"I've tried to get a deal done with North Melbourne all year."
"I didn't see this coming, I always thought he'd stay."
He stopped short of criticising North for obtaining Shaun Higgins and Jarrad Waite.
"[Levi" will work really well with Pendles."
Pickering said he felt for North supporters "but that's the business we're in now."
Pickering on Jeff Garlett, who he also manages:
- He will go to Melbourne
- Pickering has spoken to both the Blues and Demons, and the clubs just have to organise a deal.
- "It will get done."
- It had come down to a choice for Garlett between Melbourne and Essendon
Melbourne has confirmed on its website that the Demons will work with Carlton to facilitate a trade for Jeff Garlett.
Rodney Eade said earlier at Collingwood that the reason Mitch Clark chose Geelong over Collingwood is that his girlfriend wants to be a doctor, and the only course she could get into was at Deakin University in Geelong.
Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon has suggested that the depth in this year's draft pool means the Dogs may not want to bring in any players from other clubs.
"If we sit back and make no trades at all, given the quality of this year's draft, that puts us in a really exciting position," he said.
The Bulldogs have three picks inside the top 30 after acquiring a second-round compensation pick for Shaun Huggins.
St Kilda list manager Ameet Bains has told the club's website that discussions have continued with Sydney on Tuesday in relation to young forward Tim Membrey, who has requested a trade to the Saints.
"St Kilda has had more 'positive discussions' with Sydney regarding Tim Membrey, but with Nick Malceski heading to the Gold Coast, they are letting the Swans work through that first," Bains said.

James Hird has given a pre-season update on the Essendon website.
On Ben Howlett and Jason Winderlich, he could not give a specific update but praised both players
"We'd like to keep both Jason and Ben," Hird said.
On Paddy Ryder:
"It'd have to be a good deal for us otherwise Paddy will stay an Essendon player."
"He's a required player."
He also added that the Bombers needed to bring in another ruckman, and that the club had established an interview process to determine a replacement for departing assistant coach Simon Goodwin - who is headed to Melbourne as part of a succession plan with Paul Roos.
It looks like Jono O'Rourke has chosen Hawthorn as his preferred destination.
This on the St Kilda website:
"Tom Petroro rang a short time ago to advise that St Kilda had run a close second in securing Jono's services. While very impressed with the Club and its future prospects, after a few days of deliberation he has opted to pursue another option," says Ameet Bains.
Sydney coach John Longmire has told AFL Trade Radio that Rhyce Shaw will play on in 2015.
Statement from North Melbourne on Levi Greenwood:
“We were hopeful that Levi would re-sign and stay at North Melbourne and it is disappointing to lose a player of his calibre,” football director Geoff Walsh said.
“The commerciality of AFL today is very real and an environment that both clubs and players alike are a part of. In this particular case Levi has been presented with a superior offer from another club, and we fully understand how the system works.
“The significant piece of work that remains is for Levi’s nominated club to be able to provide compensation that is able to satisfy us.”
Richmond football manager Dan Richardson has given an update on the Jason Winderlich situation.
“We were hopeful, perhaps, of him being able to be acquired as a free agent, but it looks like he’s contracted to Essendon by way of an option clause. We’ll work our way through that over the coming days," Richardson told the club's website.
“Ultimately, with an option clause like that, it would require Essendon, or the club in question, to release the player.
“That looks unlikely to happen at this stage. The other option is a trade, but that’s probably not an avenue we’re keen to go down the path of at this point.”
Liam Mannix reports that Collingwood father-son recruit Darcy Moore is modelling his game on Lance Franklin.
Collingwood recruiting manager Derek Hine has spoken about Levi Greenwood.
"We are really pleased we are the club of Levi's choice," Hine told the club's website.
"We will now talk with North Melbourne about the appropriate terms for a trade."
