The former South Sydney rugby league captain faces charges of murder and causing grievous bodily harm to a person with intent after the alleged blow left Mr Kane with serious head injuries that led to his death.
Mr Kane was found lying unconscious outside the Kingscliff Beach Hotel on July 15 in 2012.
The Tweed farmer was placed on life support but later died in hospital. The trial will start on November 18 at NSW Supreme Court in Lismore and is expected to last three weeks.
Field remains on bail and was not present at Sydney Supreme Court yesterday when the trial date was set.
