I WRITE in desperation in the last week in September prior to the introduction of another six months of daylight saving.
For the past 20 years Citizens Against Daylight Savings has presented indisputable evidence to state premiers of NSW that daylight saving (DLS) has dangerous and adverse side effects causing problems for all sections of the community who cannot adjust physically, medically or mentally to daylight saving.
We have pleaded for a reprieve in the form of what was a 2011 election promise to review it by Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner and National Party MPs.
They need to announce that daylight saving will cease prior to the October 6, 2014, introduction.
We desperately need a three-year trial without DLS to assess the advantages or disadvantages to the community.
This would be the first step to solving the problems that contribute to depression due to sleep deprivation.
Professor Dorothy Bruck, a psychologist from the Sleep Health Foundation, says sleep deprivation has some major impacts on children, affects their ability to learn at school and is a factor that causes depression.
Sadly, sleep deprivation has been reported as a major factor for children with ADD and other sleep problems.
A lack of sleep interferes with children’s growth and behaviour patterns and contributes to children being abused.
Psychological stress of caring for children is difficult enough without breaking routine sleeping time.
We have appealed on behalf of young children who have to get up an hour earlier to travel to school on country buses.
We thank Kevin Anderson for presenting anti-DLS petitions to Parliament.
