But not when you are the manager of a nightclub called the Vegas Hotel and you claim you were hog-tied while a gang of men – who police allege are your mates – steal the weekend's takings.

Police allege the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars from the late-night spot on King Cross' golden mile on July 14 last year was an elaborate inside job.

What's more, part of the group allegedly planned to repeat their success by robbing the same Darlinghurst Road nightclub three months later.

Documents tendered to court alleged former Vegas Hotel manager Feng Ye, 30, conspired with the nightclub's security guard, Islam Elshaimy, 21, his brother Adam, 24, and Ammar Chahal to fake an armed robbery inside the business after hours.

More than a year after the incident, police arrested Mr Feng after he allegedly confessed to his role in an interview last week.

NSW Police Robbery & Serious Crime Detective Inspector Michael Banfield said the group met at a Burwood cafe the day before the robbery.

Mr Ye was allegedly given a mobile phone so he could let the group know the best time to break in.

In the early hours of July 14, security footage captured a Toyota Echo as it drove into Kellett Street behind the business.

At 7am, the night manager's shift ended and he left the night's takings with Mr Ye.

Police alleged Adam Elshaimy and Mr Chahal smashed through the glass entrance doors with a claw hammer once the night manager had left and made a beeline for Mr Ye. They pretended to threaten him with knives and restrained him by loosely binding his wrists with cable leads for the security cameras.

Once they had filled a black bag with cash, the pair ran out and jumped into a waiting car driven by Islam Elshaimy.

An e-tag on the getaway car captured the trio using the Cross City Tunnel to get to and from the hotel on the morning of the robbery, police alleged.

Police also said the Elshaimy brothers then conspired with Mr Chahal and his brother Mamdouh to rob the Vegas Hotel a second time.

But police, who had been monitoring the group's phone calls, arrested the Chahal brothers behind the hotel on October 21.

Police alleged they found a balaclava, a mask, several pairs of gloves, two tomahawks and two mobile phones in the car they had driven there.

About the same time, Adam Elshaimy was arrested in Bay Street, Double Bay. Later that night officers also arrested his brother Islam in Liverpool.

The Elshaimys and Chahals, who had been charged on various counts of robbery, were all on bail.

Police did not suggest Mr Feng was involved in the second planned robbery but he was charged with the first.
