DESPITE losing the NERU grand final to the Armidale Blues, Robb College captain Tom Kent said being able to play his final game in the green in a close grand final was a good way to go out.

Following three 20 plus point defeats to the Blues all season Robb managed to be sitting just three points off the lead with 15 to go before an oversight let the Blues go back-to-back.
All game French flanker Cedric Sadel had been able to keep blues number eight Mike TeMoana as quite as anybody can keep big Mike. With seven minutes left on the clock the referee had had enough of the frenchmen’s tactics around the ruck and put him in the bin.
In the heat of the moment no-one noticed at the next scrum that the seven was missing, no-one except TeMoana.
The lock breaking from the scrum and without the flanker there carried opposite number and Robb captain Tom Kent over the line to score the winning points.
“Mike is a class above and Cedric was shutting him down all day,” Kent said.
“It was probably an oversight by me but we just didn’t notice until it was too late.”
TeMoana crossed to secure an eight point 18-10 lead which the game finished at.
“We just couldn’t hold them out any more,” Kent said.
“We defended at least 50 of the 80 minutes and had done well.”
“They were getting flustered.”
The skipper said that all season attacking line-outs had been a strength of the side but they couldn’t get them going on Saturday, although they were good in the scrum.
“We were probably on top in the scrums early. We scored points when we had the ball we just didn’t quite have enough.
“Although they started to get on top of us at the end.”
The students had a few rolling mauls five metres out from the Blues line but couldn’t convert as the premiers held on.
Prop Will Chaffey was one of the stand-outs for the greens, and played a good portion of the game with a broken wrist.
The prop didn’t know it was broken until he came off later with a dislocated shoulder on the same arm.
“All the forwards played well,” Kent said. “The backs defended well but it was unfortunate they didn’t get more ball and show what they can do.”
David Jones at fullback made some great runs out of his own half off kick returns and was coming into the line to trouble the Blues defence.
Will Archer also had a good game at six.
The game was Robb’s first finals appearance in eight years and the Blues first back-to-back title.
Kent, Archer, Chaffey, Josh Carter and a few others all finished degrees this year and will leave the club after four years service.
