Gordon, a four-year-old German shepherd attached to the dog squad, arrived in the city to much fanfare last week as part of a month-long trial.
He was called into action on Saturday night when police attended a Manilla Rd property after reports a man had attempted to self-harm.
Gordon, under the guidance of his handler, was able to use his super sense of smell to track down the man to the backyard of a nearby house.
The man, who was described as being in a “dazed condition”, was taken to Tamworth hospital for assessment.
Gordon’s month-long posting came after a lengthy community-driven campaign to have a dog permanently attached to the Oxley command.
At the end of the trial, NSW Police will evaluate its success and decide whether a dog should become an enduring member of the local ranks.
