Victorian drug couriers receiving lightest sentences in Australia

Victorian drug mules are receiving the lightest prison sentences in the country and those being handed down in all states are dramatically below the maximum, sparking criticism from one of Victoria's most senior judges.

Importing up to 1.5 kilograms of heroin into Australia carries a maximum penalty of 25 years under federal laws, but sentencing data put before the Victorian Court of Appeal shows in recent years sentences rarely get close to a third of that.
