His existence was an emotional rollercoaster, soaring and dipping on each new diagnosis.
And in a bittersweet announcement, the father-of-four has been honoured as the Repco Dad of the Year, just days after Bailon, 4, passed away.
Mr Johnson will donate $2000 of the $10,000 first prize to neuroblastoma research and said he was deeply humbled by the award.
“I guess my Bailon has been looking over me,” Mr Johnson posted to Facebook.
“I’m so proud of all my babies, especially Bailon, who has shown me what it really is to be a dad.”
Mr Johnson, a single father, accrued 11,500 public votes to win the online competition.
Tamworth mum Bec Wherritt, a family friend and administrator of the Justice for Bailon Facebook page, said Mr Johnson’s commitment to his son had touched thousands.
“The dedication Randy showed Bailon and his three girls is amazing,” Ms Wherritt said.
“He shared so much of his journey with Bailon online that most people now feel like they know him.
“He put his entire life on hold and is an inspiration to all of us.”
Bailon passed away last Tuesday just two weeks after being diagnosed with two secondary tumours.
His team, the Souths Rabbitohs, paid tribute to Bailon after winning the NRL qualifying final match against Manly, many donning black armbands.
Bailon’s hero, halfback Adam Reynolds, pointed to Bailon’s name inscribed on his wrist and gestured to the heavens after scoring his first try.
The details of Bailon’s funeral have not yet been finalised.
