The general duties dog and handler – which arrived in Tamworth yesterday – have been posted to the Oxley Command as part of a one month trial following a public campaign.
The German shepherd and its handler will be on call and rostered on various operations from today in a trial which will closely watched by the government and police heads.
NSW Police Minister Stuart Ayres, along with the head of the dog squad, Superintendent Donna Adney, and Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson made the announcement at the Oxley LAC base last month, but won’t say how the trial will be assessed.
Despite calls for a drug dog, the police hierarchy said the general purpose dog was best suited for the trial and will be used for tracking, searching and assisting officers with criminal apprehension.
The dog will remain in Tamworth until mid-October.
