Starting in October, for half-an-hour on the second Tuesday of each month, up to six speakers can raise issues and express views before the council.
Unlike the existing community consultation held before each meeting, residents will not be bound to only address issues relating to that meeting’s business paper.
Deputy mayor Russell Webb said the forums would give residents a chance to make councillors and council staff aware of important issues in the community.
“I think it’s a fantastic idea and I think over time it will get quite a lot of utilisation ... it’s a great opportunity for the ratepayers of this town,” he said.
“We are presently getting quite a bit of flack about the way we do things. I think this might be just one of the tools in our toolbox.”
Residents will be given a maximum of three minutes to speak, but must refrain from asking direct questions of either councillors or staff.
They are also prohibited from raising the same issue more than three times in a 12-month period.
Members of the public wishing to take part must register before 4.30pm on the day of the forum.
To register, call council on 6767 5557, or download a form that will soon be available on the council’s website.
The first public forum will be held on October 14 in the function room on level four at Ray Walsh House.
