THE following is a direct quote from the minutes of the Tamworth Regional Council meeting of August 26:
“That in relation to the Mayoral Minute “Letter of Support – Everich Greater China Investor (Australia) Alliance”, council provide a letter of support for the establishment of the alliance and its future recognition as the Greater China Chamber of Commerce.”
Everich Greater China Investor (Australia) Alliance is a Pty Ltd company.
The full name that should have been disclosed is Everich Greater China Investor (Australia) Alliance Pty Ltd. It is a single company, not an alliance of companies as purported in the council minutes.
It is a multi-facetted company, but its prime goal and responsibilities are to make profits for its shareholders – the same as any other company.
This leads to a number of questions:
What exactly is the Tamworth Regional Council (TRC) intending to indicate its support for?
How can a single company become a Chamber of Commerce in its own right?
How will the TRC deal with two separate chambers of commerce?
What does this mean to local businesses that belong to the current established local Tamworth Business Chamber?
Who paid (in part or total) for the recent TRC trip to Hong Kong and China?
I believe the documentation tabled at the Tuesday, August 26 TRC meeting was at best poorly researched, or at worst, intentionally misleading.
The TRC must realise that it is not a private enterprise but a government body elected by and operating on behalf of all ratepayers.
All actions taken must be in the best interests of the community at large.
The information presented would not have provided the councillors representing us with sufficient information to make an informed decision.
The TRC must become an open and transparent government body.
