Hawkes Racing has been busy moving horses down the highway to Melbourne to escape the big wet and Messene will lead the charge in the first group 1 of the year, the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday. "He left on Tuesday night and has arrived and settled in very well," co-trainer Michael Hawkes said. "He needs a dry track and that's what he is going to get, and we are very happy with where we have him going into the race. It is a great opportunity for him to get that group 1 win." Joining Messene in Melbourne are Lorna May and Real Surreal which will also run at Caulfield on Saturday, while San Domenico winner Nostradamus is entered for The Run To The Rose at Rosehill and McNeil Stakes at Caulfield. "We are waiting to the last possible moment with him because of the Golden Rose," Hawkes said. "He has to go on Thursday night if he is running in Melbourne and it will really depend if we think the track is improving at Rosehill. He has come through the San Domenico very well and wherever he runs he will go close."
