Milton Francis Shorter walked into Tamworth Local Court for the first time on Tuesday with supporters after being granted conditional bail earlier this month.
The 72-year-old is facing three charges, including aggravated indecent assault of a child under 16, sexual intercourse with a person under 10 and aggravated sexual assault of a child under 16.
Following an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a child more than 15 years ago, Shorter was arrested on August 8 at his home in Barraba before he was charged by Macksville detectives.
He was refused bail by police and remained in custody before Magistrate Michael Holmes granted conditional bail on August 15.
Detectives will allege the offences occurred in the Macksville area.
Yesterday, acting magistrate Steven Jackson told the court, given the historical nature of the allegations, “I think we need to keep the pressure on the prosecution to get a brief.”
The case has been referred to the DPP which has been ordered to compile the evidence into the case.
Shorter remains on bail.
