The girls became the first female McCarthy side to win the state title, with the two sides’ results being the most successful campaign to date.
Krystal Booby, Josie Chick, Lily Darcy, India Dietrich, Sienna Kennedy, Whitney Martin, Miah O’Sullivan, Hannah Page, Grace Salter and Stacey Thrift turned the tables on Monte St Angelo in the final, after the North Sydney school was the only side to beat them in the pool games.
The girls got that loss out of the way straight up, going down 37-26.
They then turned it on to beat St Pius Adamstown, HSC Bellambi, and Carroll College Broule.
A hard fought 68-57 win over Mackillop Bathurst booked them a place in the final against Monte St Angelo.
Coach and Thunderbolt Luke Krug said the girls won it in the first minute.
Paige and Martin launched the girls to an 8-nil lead within 60 seconds.
“They got back within two but we were always ahead with them chasing,” Krug said.
“We were up by six at halftime but then just ran away with it.”
The girls perfectly reversed the score in the loss to beat them 37-26 and take the gold.
The McCarthy boys last won the title in 2007 and went very close to doing it again.
The boys also started with a loss, going down to St Dominic’s Kingswood before bouncing back to win the next four straight.
An extremely tense finish saw them book a grand final spot with an 85-81 point victory over St Pius Adamstown.
Unfortunately, the boys couldn’t do what the girls did as St Dominic’s Kingswood beat them again in the final 41-33.
Coach Paul Hobson said that a tough two-hour semi had really taken it out of the boys that morning.
“They were jut a bit more energetic,” Hobson said.
Toby Whale and Riley Murphy had good carnivals, with Year Seven student Sam Ellicott the standout in the final.
