But when total strangers come to your aid, that’s when you know you’re part of a truly special community.
In today’s Leader there are two stories in particular that illustrate this point to perfection.
The family of the late Glen Turner spoke to The Leader about their much- loved partner, father, brother and son because they wanted to say a simple, but heartfelt, thank you.
At the worst possible time in their lives they have been truly touched by the generosity and support they’ve received from the community; from those close to them, but also from people who didn’t know Glen, but who have wanted to express how sorry they are that he was taken too soon.
Nothing can spare them their grief and pain, but they have taken comfort in the support they have received and which they know will help Glen’s legacy live on.
Yesterday our great community spirit and empathy came to the fore again when a Tamworth family lost their possessions in a house fire on Thursday night.
An appeal has been established to help with replacing some of what they’ve lost and strangers have been quick to lend a hand.
Rural and regional communities don’t always get the best wrap, but when you’re at your lowest, you can count on them to help lift you back up.

THE Tamworth area business community came together last night to celebrate its best and brightest at a gala awards night at TRECC.
Running a business can be a thankless task at times so to be nominated for, and perhaps win, an award that acknowledges excellence is recognition of a “job well done”.
For many businesses, the current environment has never been as challenging as it is now, as the internet continues to drive retail, and even service industries, into unmarked territory.
But what last night’s awards illustrate is that nothing beats the personal touch – a business where you’re greeted with a smile, knowledge and experience comes to the fore, and nothing is too much trouble.
Our small businesses are also the drivers of our economy and as they prosper and succeed, so does our region.
To last night’s winners, nominees and the hundreds equally worthy of an award, we salute you – and keep up the good work.
