AN ARMIDALE group concerned with social justice and human rights issues will join with 40 other similar regional groups around Australia on August 30 for a national weekend of protest.

March Armidale spokeswoman Elizabeth O’Hara said they were a diverse group of local people advocating for equal access to education, health care and social support, the protection of environment and an emphasis on social justice.
“We are united in the view that all Australians deserve a fair go in a caring community which refuses to sacrifice the weakest members of society for the short-term economic gain of a few,” she said.
“We must persuade the federal and state governments to stop pursuing policies which threaten our planet and our international standing; policies for which they have no popular mandate.”
The group is holding a rally in the Armidale Mall on Saturday, August 30, at 11am, where local speakers will address a range of issues, including the refugee experience, governance, climate change and biodiversity, the ABC, coal seam gas and coalmining, and threats to infrastructure, education and health.
The second event scheduled for the day is a concert at the Uniting Church Hall from 6pm, which will also serve as a fundraiser to assist in the campaign to prevent mining in the Leard State Forest and Pilliga.
