Robin Kaluder, of Watsons Creek, said it was a lot of work to organise an event like this on your own but it was well worth it, for the sake of the young ladies.
The first Daffodil Ball, a fundraiser for The Cancer Council, will be held at Tamworth Town Hall, from 7pm on Saturday.
“I’m doing it because we’ve been doing the Absolutely Everybody Ball for the past three years,” Mrs Kaluder said .
“I had kids with disabilities in a ballroom class and I decided I was going to do a ball for them and then all the organisations decided to help me and we did it for three years... Challenge Disability Services, Northcott, House with No Steps and Lifeline.
“Then, this year we were heading towards it and they felt that they needed to postpone it for another year.
“And I had some girls who missed out last year. They had to go to family wedding and they were going to miss out.
“It’s primarily a debutante ball. This year we have 12; the first year we had 21.
“Over the years we’ve included anyone ... (but) it was to give the disabled kids a go.”
The John Muller Band will play and tickets to the ball are $45.
“It’s going to be a lovely night ... we’ve got some guest artists coming along dancing. I’d just like to see the balls keep on going,” Mrs Kaluder said.
“It’s sad to think it is (a dying tradition)... but it’s the one good chance for girls to wear a nice, white dress. In the old days it was when you started going out dancing and ‘making your entrance into the arena’, so to speak.”
Tickets are available from Robin Kaluder or Tamworth Secretarial Service in Brisbane St.
