After reading a very small item in a previous edition of The Leader, I have now received the official TRC letter regarding the annual On-Site Sewage Management System (OSSMS) fee and Approval to Operate (ATO) – funny, I thought that referred to the Australian Tax Office!

I wonder how many “bean counters” from within the ivory tower called TRC it took to realise how much revenue they could drag in by putting a fee on every septic tank installation in the council region?
Yes, every rural property, hobby farm, sports club, school, recreation ground – they would all have septic tanks – be it, Somerton, Duncans Creek, Niangala, Upper Manilla, Crow Mountain as well as every village in between.
To add insult to injury – even if you have a rural property that is part TRC, and part in the adjoining council – you still get charged the full $10.
Oh, and the revelation is the fees collected will be used to fund the OSSMS-related programs and activities, including an OSSMS education and assessment program, GIS mapping of OSSMS, water quality testing and incident investigations!
I would say it will do nothing else but provide funds for the wages and motor vehicle usage of the – how many qualified staff? – to actually carry out the inspections.
Secondly, when can the ratepayers of Tamworth Regional Council expect to be given information regarding the proposed development of the new lawn cemetery – within the Glen Artney Estate – smack bang up against the boundary fence of Lincoln Grove Memorial Gardens lawn cemetery?
There is a perfectly good area of land up for sale directly across the road from the existing cemetery – with established trees and water called the showground.
Wouldn’t that be a more suitable location?
It is time this council moved with the times and established a cemetery to accommodate the many cultural needs of the people of the region, within tranquil peaceful well-maintained gardens – not out on a hard, dry flat on the edge of a rapidly developing industrial estate.
