Cathedral Park is one of the prettiest picnic spots in Newcastle, its lush grass shaded by fig and olive trees, its gentle slopes offering uninterrupted views of the port and heritage district. It also happens to be one big unmarked grave. Between 1804 and 1884, Newcastle buried 3300 of its dead here, almost half of them infants. When the cemetery became a park in 1972, however, the headstones were removed, and the locations of many of the bodies were lost.
