When I arrived at the July gig, my timing was a bit off. I missed most of a brand newie from one of my favourite local writers, Wendy Wood, but the part I heard, was great.
Some of the other songwriters that shared their newest “babies” on the night included Wanita, Carolyne Morris, Stan Heuston, Sarah Head, EJ Crosby-Wolfe, John Cunliffe and Peter Campbell.
This monthly gathering provides a nurturing environment for aspiring writers of any genre and has uncovered the talents of some fabulous artists over the past few years.
Song of the night was Home For Me, written and performed by Daniel Higgins of Nowendoc.
As song of the night winner, Daniel gets to perform his song live on 2TM, have a short profile and photo included in Country Music Capital News, record the song and have it included on a compilation CD and he also goes into the running for the Song of the Year title, announced in January 2015.
Lawrie plays guitar for most of the acts, and usually has his trusty offsider, Hired Hand Randall Wilson, lending support on drums.
The showcases are held upstairs at the Hog’s Breath Café on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
Songwriters love an audience, so why don’t you get along one time. It’s a terrific atmosphere and you’ll meet some very interesting people, guaranteed.
SPEAKING of songwriters, I’ve heard a whisper Tamworth could be included on the itinerary of one of the world’s best, Rodney Crowell, next year.
How cool would that be? I had the privilege of attending a concert of his five years ago in Canberra and it was nothing short of sensational.
South Australian expat Jedd Hughes is a fixture in Crowell’s touring band. What a coup it would be to see Jedd and Crowell’s longtime friend and producer Will Kimbrough touring Down Under with this
living legend.
