"The blind audition was nerve-wracking but then after that each performance got easier and easier," the punk rock fan said.

"The show has taught me a lot of things, just about being myself and being more confident".

One of his tricks is to picture himself as a member of the audience, sitting behind the judges. "What would I want to see?" he asks himself.

Mentored by Good Charlotte band members Benji and Joel Madden, Chris is working his way toward the victor's $50,000 scholarship.

But to take out the prize he will have to surpass another Sydneysider, 11-year-old Ruhi, whose rendition of Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come had all four judges turn their chairs in the blind audition. 

An RnB and hip-hop fan, Ruhi is under the wing of the artist formerly known as Scary Spice, Mel B.

"When it comes to having fun and that, she's really funny, but when it comes to performing she's serious, there's no playing around, it's just 'get it done'," Ruhi said.

One day he hopes to be a better singer than his father and, after weeks of filming the show, he is closer to realising his goal.

"Compared to last year, heaps of people say 'you've gotten so much better' and I go 'thank you'," he said. "So, coming from that feedback from other people, I think I've improved my voice."

Ruhi and Chris, the only boys left in the competition, are vying against Bella, Grace, Alexa and Maddison to be in the final trio.

In reality, filming wound up two months ago with producers filming three alternate victories. A public vote is set to determine the overall winner and which show goes to air.

Whatever happens, Chris has new insights into TV production, music making and what it takes to work a stage.

"It was really, really, really cool to be part of," he says.
