Tasman Health Cannabinoids will be free to commence producing medical-grade cannabis for the export market once the final details of the deal are thrashed out and a licence granted in the near future.
Tamworth has been at the forefront of a groundswell of national support for the legalisation of medicinal cannabis after being inspired by the courage of local man Dan Haslam and his family.
Tasman Health Cannabinoids chief executive officer Troy Langman said the arrangement with the Norfolk Island government removed the hurdle of supply from debate surrounding the issue.
“We dearly look forward to the day when we can supply Australian patients, but in the meantime we have substantial export opportunities, such as to Europe and Canada, where medicinal cannabis is legal,” he said.
Norfolk Island’s Minister for Cultural Heritage and Community Services, Robin Adams, said the licensing regime would be “appropriately rigorous”.
Norfolk Island, which has a population of 2300 people, is a largely self-governing territory of Australia located in the South Pacific Ocean.
