Mr Fraser will address members of the Armidale community and tackle the question: “Should Australia be involved in a war that may be sparked by China and the United States?”
Earle Page academic master Amanda Kennedy said Mr Fraser was one of Australia’s strongest advocates for a close alliance with the US during the Vietnam War, but he has undergone a shift in thinking. “In recent years, Mr Fraser has argued for greater independence from the US, in the interests of stronger relations with China,” Dr Kennedy said.
Emertius professor of political science at UNE Graham Maddox suggested the handling of the Iraq War and China’s economic rise may have swayed Mr Fraser.
Professor Maddox said it was “outstanding” Mr Fraser would address the college as he had long been “a voice of conscience” in the political community.
