When US forces killed Osama bin Laden in May 2011, it marked the end of al-Qaeda as a unified global force. Straining under the losses caused by relentless US drone strikes, the old guard of al-Qaeda was already struggling to maintain control over the organisation it created. And when Osama bin Laden died, al-Qaeda as we knew it died with him.
