The three-year-old boy was playing with siblings out the back of a Thompson Cr home on Monday just after 4pm when their ball was thrown over the fence.
According to police, the boy asked the neighbour if he could retrieve the ball in the yard, while the dog was tied up.
Shortly after, police said, it appeared the dog was tied up when it attacked the child, causing severe lacerations to his face.
Ambulance paramedics were called to the home and rushed the boy to Tamworth hospital for treatment of lacerations to his forehead and cheek.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and council rangers will be notified.
