21 years young, the club celebrated its coming of age with a huge response to its day.
At one stage, it appeared more than 70 cars might front for the meet but a few late withdrawals culled that by a few, club stalwart Gundy Hunt said.
“After a few late withdrawals, 66 cars fronted the timekeepers for a great weekend of motor sport where some very competitive times were recorded,” he said.
“Newcastle’s Eddie McCane (Hayward Suzuki, 34.89sec) held out hard-charging Kempsey driver Darren Reid in his little Minetti sports car (35.59sec).
“Third and fourth fastest saw a good duel between two Kempsey drivers – Allan Hindes and Dave Morrow – in their Suzuki-powered race cars, with their respective times of 35.84sec and 35.97sec.”
Hunt was fastest of the Tamworth drivers in his Hunter clubman with a 39.20sec and 8th outright as well as second in the sports car class.
“Local lad Craig Albertson (Falcon turbo 6) finally broke the 40sec barrier with a scorching lap of 39.68sec to be second fastest Tamworth driver and 11th outright and win his class,” Hunt added.
“Matt Halpin (Torana) was 12th outright and first in his class with a time of 39.96secs.
“Other Tamworth drivers to win their class were clubman cars Roddy Wyllie (Caterham, 40.21sec) who narrowly beat Kees Van De Horsts (Westfield Clubman, 40.61sec).
“In type 3 over 2-0 litre, Dave Rogers threw his big V8 Falcon around in crowd-pleasing style to win his class with a 40.80sec time.
“In type 2 under 2.0 litre, Cameron Bell drove superbly to win in 41.13sec while Stephen Lynch drove his Mazda MX5 (42.65sec) to a win in type 1 under 2.0 litre.”
