Breaking up may be hard to do but it seems one of the world’s most famous former couples are both reaping the rewards of singledom after Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki tasted victory on the same day.

Northern Irish golfer McIlroy won his first British Open by two shots while former world No.1 Wozniacki made light work of Italy’s Roberta Vinci 6-1, 6-1 to take the Istanbul Cup, her first tour win since October.

Wozniacki was world No.1 for 67 weeks despite having never won a major singles title. The one and only grand slam final she reached was the 2009 US Open and she is currently ranked 15th.
McIlroy was in the box seat at Royal Liverpool from the opening round, when he blitzed the field with a six-under par round of 66 on Thursday which he repeated in the second round. He followed up with a four-under 68 to take a six-shot advantage into the final day.
A round of 71 was enough for the 25-year-old to win his first Open and third major championship.

He joined Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus as the only golfers to claim three majors before turning 26 and has the chance to add to that in next month’s PGA Championship and April’s Masters tournament at Augusta National, the only leg of the career grand slam he is yet to conquer.
The glamour couple, who were scheduled to tie the knot in November, broke their engagement in May just days after invitations had been sent out. McIlroy said in a statement ‘‘the problem is mine.’’
‘‘The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails,’’ the statement added.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the serial tweeters were quick to post about their respective victories but neither found the time to congratulate the other.
