That was the assessment of Scone trainer Rod Northam after his exciting chestnut gelding, Big Money, won yesterday’s $150,000 Crowe Horwarth Ramornie Handicap (1200m).

Northam, who won Sunday’s South Grafton Cup with Myamira, bounced back from a fourth with Husswick in the Guineas to win the feature sprint at the XXXX carnival with a talented “little trier”.

Big Money also gave Robert Thompson his fourth win in the Ramornie and the second time the Cessnock jockey has gone back to back.

Thomspon won the 2007-2008 Ramornies with the Paul St Vincent-trained Tamworth gelding, the Jackal.

Last year Thompson won the Ramornie with Ross Stitt’s Youthful Jack.

“Great to win the two on The Jackal and last year with Youthful Jack. They were coming to the end of their campaigns,” Thompson said.

“This bloke is a young horse on the way up so there could be something special in store for him.”

Rod Northam was elated, not just for himself, but Scone as well.

“What a great day for Scone, three wins. Luke Griffith and Michael Gallagher won earlier. It’s Luke’s shout though, his horse paid bigger odds.”

Big Money, he said, was a special little horse.

“He’s not real big but he’s a real little trier, he loves winning.”

Northam was never worried in running, having complete faith in Thompson’s ability to find a run after travelling on the fence for much of the race.

Northam said Big Money would go straight to the paddock and then come back for the Spring, with a Melbourne campaign or even a trip to Perth possible.
