"Wayne, who used to run the coffee shop at Warwick Farm, brought that around," Walter says.

"He's been sick for the last couple of years and, as everyone did, just loved Guy – so he came around here and put the old white ute as well as the red and white flowers in the pot plant for me."

There's more signage, this bearing the Tie The Knot moniker in multitude, only a few steps away. It carries a plaque for each group 1 winner Guy Walter trained. Wendy had planned to order a new board to alleviate the cramping problem, but reckons she can squeeze the last two still missing on there. Somewhere.

Not that her late husband was overly thrilled when she unwittingly revealed the glossy exhibition to the champion trainer in the dark of night.

"It was between boxes 10 and 11 so when owners walked in the driveway they would see the big honour roll," Wendy Walter says. "But when we walked back into the yard late one night there was a reflection off it and it almost blinded him. He said, 'what have you done?' It didn't stay there for long."

They're all reminders. Photos abound, too. Of a smiling trainer with the horses who had made him happy.

"When it first happened I said I didn't want to stay in this house," Walter says of her husband's sudden death six weeks ago. "But now I'm a bit more relaxed about it."

You can probably thank, in part, Peter Robl and Blake Shinn for that. One jockey whose career is in limbo and another at the top of his game.

From assesing ratings, mapping out programs, representing the stable on race day – they have been there in Wendy's time of need.

"I probably would have shut up shop first day," Walter says. "But they also helped me realise I'd learnt a bit from Guy that I didn't realise I had.

"We didn't know [Shinn] that well before his suspension [for betting on races], but on his return you could just see he was so determined to get back and ride well. He put his head down and he took his job so seriously to prove to people he wanted to ride winners.

"He's now talking more and more about who he's going to associate himself with now in regards to trainers to better his career again.

"I had no idea – and Guy would still be watching – both he and Peter would come this far."

Wendy was with Guy every step of the way as the south coast horseman emerged into prominence and, 30 years ago, turned his back on Randwick to set up base at Warwick Farm.

They quietly established themselves in Sydney before Tie The Knot, bearing the famous red colours of the Tait family, burst onto the scene in the late 1997.

Asked what impact the 13-time group 1 winner had on them, Wendy says: "Mainly financial. But he was an amazing racehorse with a lot of character. He was more like a human and would talk to you.

"When he would go for a spell we would roughly know when the floats would be coming and in the float he would start whinnying around the corner there. We would say, 'he's home'. He's so intelligent and to call out from the corner saying, 'I'm home', was really cute.

"Guy always said, 'I'm glad I didn't get him when I was too young'. He knew a lot more about training when he came along. He always said he was an easy horse to train, but to me he was a hard horse to train because he got fat overnight. He loved his food. He had to have hard work because he was such a good doer. To me that's not an easy horse to train."

It won't be easy for Walter to close the doors to the famous stable on Saturday.

In a year, she says, she might "get the bug" to train a few horses again after taking out an interim licence following her husband's death.

Now it's all about one last chance to celebrate the Walter name in the racebook at Rosehill on Saturday, headlined by quirky and talented stayer Sense Of Occasion.

"It's interesting watching the babies come through and educate them ... that's why Sense Of Occasion is really one [we like] because he was so immature, but there was something to like about him.

"[Shinn] really likes this horse and thinks he might be a cups horse – even though Blake can get carried away sometimes!"

That was something his mentor never seemed to have trouble with. Quiet, unassuming and always fond of a small joke. His greatest legacy might be the qualities of the people he has left behind.

"After what has happened, he would be so proud how everyone has worked down the back and continued the show," Walter says. "We're hoping [Saturday] will be an enjoyable day for everyone."

More importantly, everyone else is hoping it will be an enjoyable day for the family. Hoping the Walter name will bloom one last time.
