Mr Anderson, who has signalled his intention to table a private member’s bill in the NSW parliament on the issue, will hold talks with health officials, the Tasmanian government and a pioneering cannabis medicines company.

The company, Tascann, is set to launch its first clinical study into the effects of cannabis on patients suffering chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.

It hopes to be at the forefront of developing cannabis medicines “from farm to pharmacy” if and when the law changes.

Mr Anderson has issued invitations to a host of MPs from across the political spectrum, including the members of an Upper House committee that last year unanimously supported marijuana be decriminalised for the dying.

The two-day study tour will be held on July 1 and 2.

“To be able to visit a private company that has recently applied for a licence to grow and manufacture will be very beneficial,” Mr Anderson said.

“It’s important we look at other jurisdictions and see what other governments and organisations are doing.

“We don’t have to reinvent the wheel; we need to have a look and understand what others are doing so we have the best chance of making this work.”

He said he had been overwhelmed by the support of his fellow parliamentarians on the issue.

“There has been a lot of support as long as it (the bill) is directed at terminally-ill patients only and for medical use,” Mr Anderson said.

“It’s progressing well in terms of structure, we just need to work out the fine details.”
