McCarthy took two teams to Lithgow for the State Carnival, an Under 16 girls’ side and an open boys’ side.
While the boys’ side finished a creditable third, the girls’ side won the Under 16 B Division, McCarthy manager Ian McKenzie said.
“We had a fantastic carnival in Lithgow,” he said.
“Any of the three top boys’ side could have won it.
“Trinity Lismore won it but if we’d have beaten them in the round game we would have won.
“We led them 2-1 too but Brad Hughes, the NSW Under 18 drag flicker scored four of their five goals from short corners to win 5-2.
“The girls were outstanding for coach Geoff Denton.
“He had eight of his side unavailable, six of his side were Year 7 students and they did really well to win the 16B Girls’ division.
“They all have good futures and our hockey sides look good for the future.”
